Primitive reflexes are muscle reactions that are present at birth. They happen automatically in response to certain types of stimulation. Many parents are familiar with 2 of the survival reflexes known as the Moro (startle reflex) and the rooting reflex. Besides the Moro and startle reflexes there are other important reflexes that should disappear as the child develops. The presence and strength of these reflexes are good indicators that an infant is experiencing proper neural development and function. Primitive reflexes disappear when they are no longer needed, but reflexes that are weak, early or retained past 12 months of age can interfere with cortical processing and impede social, academic and normal motor planning/learning. Abnormal reflexes can contribute to neuro developmental delays such as: attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, cerebral palsy, learning disabilities and sensory processing disorders.
Children born via cesarean section, trauma, toxicity exposure, anesthetics, etc. are at increased risk at having retained primitive reflexes. Other causes may be: insufficient tummy time as an infant; lack of, or little, creeping or crawling; early walkers; head injuries; excessive falls; and chronic ear infections.
